South Lamar neighborhood in Austin

South Lamar

Laid-back vibes, Alamo Drafthouse, and the best coffee shops in the city.

South Lamar Boulevard got its name from Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar, the second President of the Republic of Texas, when the bridge over the Colorado River was completed in 1942. But the neighborhood locals call "SoLa" didn't really become the South Lamar of today until much later. Before the construction boom of the late '90s and early 2000s, this was a working-class stretch dotted with used car lots and modest housing. Artists and musicians gravitated here for cheap rent and quick access to downtown gigs. That scrappy, creative energy never fully left — it just got nicer restaurants.

The Broken Spoke is the soul of the neighborhood. This honky-tonk dance hall opened in 1964 and was registered as a historical landmark in 2023. Willie Nelson, The Chicks, and Garth Brooks have all played its small stage. The floor is worn, the chicken-fried steak is enormous, and the two-stepping is real. Show up on a Tuesday night and a regular will probably teach you the basics. Across the boulevard, Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar is where Austin's famous movie-theater-meets-restaurant concept started. Talking during the film will get you kicked out, and that's part of the charm.

Food-wise, SoLa has quietly become one of the best eating corridors in the city. Veracruz All Natural's migas taco is a perfect breakfast — crispy tortilla strips, eggs, cheese, avocado, all wrapped up and gone in four bites. Uchi, just a block east, serves Japanese food that's been drawing national attention since it opened. For something more casual, Matt's El Rancho has been dishing out Tex-Mex since 1952 — the Bob Armstrong dip (queso with guacamole, taco meat, and sour cream) was invented here. Coffee shops are everywhere: try Seventh Flag or Fleet Coffee for a quiet afternoon work session.

What makes South Lamar special is the pace. It's five minutes from downtown but feels worlds apart. Barton Springs Pool is a short bike ride west — a 68-degree natural spring-fed swimming hole that's been the city's favorite place to cool off for over a century. Zilker Park sprawls right next door. BookPeople, the largest independent bookstore in Texas, sits at the northern end of the corridor. South Lamar is where Austinites actually hang out on their days off — no agenda, no FOMO, just a neighborhood that doesn't try too hard and doesn't need to.
